Pocket Bikes - Small & Convenient

Pocket bikes, also known as the mini moto or mini bike, is a kind of miniature sized motorcycle. Pocket bikes are not small enough to carry in your pocket, but rather small enough to carry under your arm.

Pocket bikes generally have an average speed of 40-45 mph, but can reach speeds of over 50 miles per hour. The speed of the pocket bike usually depends on the type of surface in which you are riding, and your weight.

Pocket bikes usually can be ridden with gas or electric motors. Using gas in your pocket bike usually gives the bike more power than riding just on an electric engine.
Pocket bikes were first made from spare parts from garages in the 1950s. They were first used as pit bikes for drag racers to get around in the pits during races.

As racers used them around neighborhoods, kids started building their own. Pretty soon, a whole market developed for these pocket bikes to meet these demands. Right now, there are several different types of pocket bikes.

Types of pocket bikes:

  • Minimoto: the original pocket bike used for racing on kart racing tracks.
  • Pit bikes: these are basically small scooters that look like motocross motorcycles.
  • Mini choppers: a pocket bike that looks like a chopper.
  • Quad bike: a mini bike that is a four-wheeled off-road motorcycle.

Typical pocket bikes are about one-fourth the size of a regular motorcycle and typically weigh about 40 pounds. The pocket bike is powered by a two-stroke internal combustion engine between 40 to 50 cubic centimeters that produces between 2.4 to 15 horsepower. Pocket bikes have no suspension systems.
Because the pocket bike has no suspension system, it relies mostly on its tires to absorb bumps and handle cornering. Both adults and children can race on pocket bikes.

Typically, the average speed of pocket bikes depends a lot on the size of the rider. The average speed of a pocket bike is about 40 to 45 miles per hour, but can be well over 50 miles per hour.

Smaller riders have ridden pocket bikes at speeds of 78 miles per hour on racetracks.
When you are looking to purchase a pocket bike, be sure to do a lot of research before settling on one type of bike. Pocket bikes can range from $200 to as much as $5,000 for top-of-the-line Italian model pocket bikes. Gas pocket bikes are usually faster, and are more powerful than simple electric pocket bikes.

Owning a pocket bike is a great way for children to learn about motorcycle racing. In addition, it is also a great way for adults to learn about motorcycles and motorcycle racing without the high costs of owning a full-sized motorcycle.

Pocket bikes can be tons of fun, but the laws for owning these mini motorcycles differ in every area. Also, before you purchase a pocket bike, be sure to check the laws within your local area. Most countries do not require pocket bike riders to have a license; however, some areas prohibit the use of pocket bikes on public roads.

The pocket bike should be ridden in parks, gardens or specialized race tracks. Be sure to contact the local law enforcement agencies in your area to check about the legality of riding these bikes on the street. In addition, you should always wear the proper safety equipment (helmet, knee pads etc.) when riding a pocket bike. Pocket bikes go very fast, and due to their speed and design, they are almost like riding regular motorcycles.
