Dirt Bikes - For Jumps & Stunts!

Dirt bikes are a type of motorbike and all-terrain vehicle (ATV) that is powered by an engine and specifically designed for off-road travel.

Dirt bikes have the ability to travel on a variety of off-road surfaces like dirt, gravel, sand and mud. The difference between a dirt bike and a regular motorcycle is that they have increased ground clearance, and a lighter (200-250lbs.) and narrower frame with advanced suspension systems.

The advance suspension system of the dirt bike allows the rider to complete large jumps at high speeds over rough terrain.
Because dirt bikes are designed to be lighter, things like the speedometer, lights and kickstands are omitted from the bikes design. Another important feature of the dirt bike is the seat. Dirt bikes have long flat seats that are designed to provide riders with more traction when turning corners. The long, flat seats are not made for comfort; instead, they are designed so the rider can shift their weight faster for turning corners.

Dirt bikes have two types of engines, a two-stroke engine and a four-stroke engine. A bike with a two-stroke engine is lighter, more powerful and much more cost effective than a bike with a four-stroke engine. In contrast, a bike with a four-stroke engine is usually heavier, more fuel-efficient and lasts longer than a bike with a two-stroke engine.

Dirt bikes range in power from 50cc to 650cc. A beginning dirt biker should choose a dirt bike with a lower powered engine because these dirt bikes are lighter and easier to maneuver. Beginning dirt bikers should look for dirt bikes with 250cc, 300 cc or lower power.

In addition to its lightweight and manageability, the 250 cc dirt bike is considered to be in the premier class of dirt bikes because it has become faster with newer technology.

Although still powerful, lower powered dirt bikes are just easier to control.

The dirt bike, also called a motocross bike is used in the popular sport of motocross racing (also called MotoX and MX).

Motocross racing is a form of all-terrain vehicle racing done with dirt bikes on enclosed off-road tracks.

Motocross racetracks are usually a quarter of a mile long, which is very large for bike racing tracks. In addition to their large racetracks, motocross uses natural terrain features like hills and turns, with a limited amount of man made jumps.

Another motocross sport that uses the dirt bike is freestyle motocross. Freestyle motocross is a type of competition in which the rider performs acrobatic stunts on the dirt bike while also performing a jump. The freestyle motocross rider performs the stunts while several feet in the air. In freestyle motocross, riders are judged on the style and level of difficulty of stunts they perform, as well as how they utilize the course.

Dirt bikes can be used recreationally or in motocross sports like MotoX racing and freestyle motocross. Although dirt bikes are a fun all-terrain bike, they can still be very dangerous. The appropriate safety measures should always be taken when riding a dirt bike.

Safety measures for dirt bike riding include light to heavy padding and a helmet. Helmets should always be worn when riding a dirt bike. Depending what type of dirt bike riding you are doing, padding can very from light padding to heavy padding. Taking the appropriate safety precautions, when riding a dirt bike, is the best way to prevent unwanted accidents and injuries.
